Beckum Continues To Run Across the Boarder

Spud Thomas Beckum spent his Father's Day racing across the boarder with his son, Dillon Beckum. The Spud duo ran some impressive times, with Thomas finishing 4th in 16:24 and Dillon (9 years old) finishing 20th in a speedy 22:22.

Sprague 2nd at Hamdpen 8.5 Miler

Spudlander Jeffrey Sprague took advantage of the free entry for the 33rd Edition of the Hamdpen 8.5 Miler. Sprague finished second to Spudland friend Judson Cake, who finished the course in a blistering 44:15, only five second shy of the record set by Bob Hillgrove 31 years ago in 1977. Sprague finished second in 48:07.

Milk and Potatoes

Several Spudlanders traveled down to Bangor Saturday, June 14th for the Bangor YMCA Milk Mile. The course and conditions proved quick and provided some fast times. PJ Gorneault and Spudland friend Adam Goode took the lead early and battled throughout the race, with Goode crossing the line first in 4:11 and Gorneault second in 4:12. Caribou high runners Christian Sleeper and Tim Freeme finished third and sixth, running 4:41 and 4:45. Alfred Hanscom made it under the 5 minute barrier, finishing in 4:50. Maine Running Hall of Fame Member and Spudland Honorary Member Bruce Freme still has some kick in his step running 5:36, and Rene Laliberty, coming off a winter of marathon training, ran 6:05. SPRAGUE AND GOMEZ 1-2 AT CAMDEN 10K

Jeffrey Sprague and Robert Gomez took first and second at the Camden 10k Sunday, June 1st. The Spudland duo separated themselves from the pack quickly and cruised the rest of the way with Sprague taking first in 33:22 and Gomez second in 33:59. The runs by the Spuds were the two fastest times run since 2003 on the difficult course.

Gomez Takes Two At Cabot Trail

Spudland Racer Robert Gomez headed far and away this Memorial Day weekend to take on the Cabot Trail Relay in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Gomez and 12 other runners from the pine tree state joined up and formed the "Maine-IACS." The "Maine-IACS" dominated the competition, finishing the 185 mile relay in 17 hours, 15 minutes and 59 seconds, over two hours ahead of the nearest competitors. Gomez did more than his part to help out the cause, as he ran two legs of the relay. In leg 5 he cruised to a victory of over 3 minutes, finishing the 17.5 kilometer portion in 1:01:31, a blistering 5:39/mi pace. He made it two for two in leg 14, holding off the pack through the 19.81 kilometers in 1:12:03. Congratulations on some great running Robert and the rest of the "Maine-IAC" squad!

The Spudland Trio of Jeffrey Sprague, Ryan Prescott and Robert Gomez took to the hills, or hill on Sunday, May 18th at the Sugarloaf 15k. The mostly downhill and flat course proved to be "spud friendly" as the team of three took the third, fifth and sixth overall places. Leading off was Jeffrey Sprague in a time of 49:44.3 (5:20/mi), close behind was rookie spud Ryan Prescott in 51:38.2 (5:32/mi), followed by Robert Gomez in 52:52.8 (5:40/mi.) The race was the third overall in the Maine USATF Grand Prix.

Spuds Compete at Sea Dogs 5k

The Spudland Racers more than held their own at what might be Maine's most competitive 5k of the year on Sunday. The Spuds joined nearly 2,000 others to take on the streets of Portland on a beautiful May morning. PJ Gorneault took off with the leaders and finished 7th Overall in 15:35 but only four seconds from 4th. The newest Spudland addition Ryan Prescott finished 9th Overall in 16:10 and Jeffrey Sprague rounded out the top 10 in a time of 16:16. Nick Scott finished 15th in a time of 16:44 and Robert Gomez continued to work himself back in shape with an impressive 16:55 finish. The top three Spudland finishers counted towards the USATF scoring, finishing with a combined time of 48:01, an average finish of 16:00.18. Excellent job Spuds!

St. Joseph's Standout Newest Member of Spudland Racers

Ryan Prescott, a student studying at St. Joseph's College of Maine is the newest member of the Spudland Racers Running Club. Prescott is a standout on the Monks Cross Country team and a Conference Runner of the Year. The Spuds are happy to have him on board as they look to compete with the states best in the Maine USATF Grand Prix this summer.

 

Spud Laliberty Completes Boston Marathon

Spudland Racer Rene Lalibery completed the 112th Boston Marathon Monday, April 21st. She completed the 26.2 mile journey in a time of 3:38:23, a pace of 8:20 per mile. Despite having to train through one of the worst winters in recorded history, Rene managed to finish in the top third of the field of over 25 thousand. Great job Rene!

Beckum Battles Across the Border

Thomas Beckum headed across the boarder to Canada Sunday for the 3rd Annual Grande-Digue 15k in Grande-Digue, New Brunswick. This 15km race is one of the most competitive races in Eastern Canada and draws the top runners from Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Thomas finished 8th in the tough field with a gun time of 54:24, an average pace of 5:50 per mile.
